The Bay of Plenty has a huge diversity of marine environments. The bay itself is a broad sweep of sandy coast, including barrier islands and sand spits. Rocky headlands protrude out into the sea towards the small offshore islands of volcanic origin. Behind the bays and headlands are tidal harbours and estuaries.
